海外留学レポートReport from Overseas

Enjoy Sunshine!

May . 2017
Portland weather is like summer. Even though it’s a strong sunshine, I love summer weather more than winter weather because it is quite comfortable, and I can do more activities in summer.
This is my seventh report. I’ve already finished five weeks in this term. Recently, I took mid-term exams. I prepared for a presentation about Japanese communication styles. Actually, the presentation topic was about a successful communication. That was a tough topic. The reason why I chose Japanese communication style is because I just wondered what Japanese communication style is. I have been America long time, and I have touched an American culture and communication while studying abroad. When I searched Japanese communication style and read theses, I realized what a unique Japanese communication style is. I was really happy to research about my country’s communication style. If I compare different between American and Japanese communication, it must be interesting. The tests were not good. I think the causes are that I didn’t prepare well, and the questions were really challenging! However, each teacher gave me a feedback. That is so helpful, especially, Speaking and Listening teacher pointed out my weakness points such as pronunciations and grammar. If I practice more than ever, I can overcome my weakness and improve my skills.
On weekend, I joined Japanese cultural party at starbucks. I fold origami papers and talked with customers. I was excited to it. Some American children were excited to talk with us. Another day, I went to PSU farmer’s market with my friends. There were many stands, and they sold vegetables, fruit, breads, sweets and so on. I bought some sweets and Italian sandwich for lunch. It was tasty. I recommend this place if you have a chance to go Portland in summer.
Also, I did volunteer at Portland Children’s Museum on Sunday because it had an event for Children’s day. Japanese volunteers helped each work. I was in charge of making Koinobori flag and painting Koinobori with hand. Other groups made a kite, and samurai hat. At least, children were enjoying taking part in this event as well as we had a good time.
This month, I had an opportunities to tell about Japanese culture. Telling my country’s culture is difficult, but it is challenge that I improve my skills better than before. The classes are still demanding, however, I believe that it is useful in my life in the future.
