My precious time in America
Feb . 2016
I’m going to leave here in a few days. As I said in the last report, to tell the truth, I don’t want to go back to Japan. It does not mean I hate Japan, but I really like to stay here. It is second time for me to stay in Oregon. The first stay was just for 5 weeks while spring vacation. It was first time to live in abroad for me, so everything looks exciting. However, this time, I had known many things such as about school and Oregon before I came here. I did not expect many new experiences, but I experienced a lot of new things and got skills while I am staying here.

First 3 months, from October to December, I took ESL classes in PIA. The classes are divided depend on our skills. I took Speaking and Listening, Writing, Grammar and Reading. Before I came here, I was not good at Speaking because I didn’t often talk with native speakers in English in Japan, and also, I didn’t used to state my opinion in front of many people. This is very important skill when you communicate with people who from other countries. I think especially Japanese people are not good at to do it. To improve my speaking skill was one of the biggest goal of my study abroad. In speaking class, I had a lot of chance to speak and share my opinion in front of my class mates. Even in reading class, I had to give a presentation about stories that I chose myself. These experiences gave me confidence to have my own opinion and share it with other people. Thanks to the classes, now I don’t feel nervous when I say my opinion.

After finished winter vacation, I took Service Learning Program. This is a special program of PIA, and we can do volunteer work at organization in Portland. I worked at Portland Children’s Museum and Portland Hawthorne Hostel. Through volunteering, I faced difficulties sometimes. At the hostel, I need to plan and lead the events for guests. Hostel is not so busy in this season, so it was hard to get people gather for the events. On the other hand, I met many people who from all over the world. Communicating with people who have different back grounds is very interesting for me, and it was amazing experience. In addition, I learned American culture, communication skills and business skills such as how to write business email, resume and cover letter in English in this program. This year, I will start job hunting in Japan, so I believe those skills are helpful to get a job.

I really appreciate all of people who have supported me. PIA’s teachers and staffs are very helpful and always do hard work for students. My supervisors at my placements are so kind and gave me a wonderful experience. My host family is very nice to me, and they treat me as family. I had a good time with many of my friends. I’m going to miss all of them. I’ll never forget this great experience in America, and I’m sure I’ll come back here again in the future.
