The first report about my study abroad in Oregon
Oct . 2015
This is the first report about my study abroad in Oregon. I’m not good at writing, but I think it is good opportunity to practice writing in English.

2 weeks have passed since I came to Oregon. It is second time for me to study in PIA, because when I was freshman in my university, I studied here for five weeks. I had many good experiences here.
They have many kind of activities and volunteer work. I could learn about not only about English but also American Culture. At the same time, their volunteer works gave me a chance to think about social problems in America. It was really impressive experience. That’s why I wanted to come back and study here again.

This time, I came here with my classmate Yuna, and we are going to stay here for 5 months. We arrived at Portland on September 26. We had a transit at Narita and we had to wait next flight for 7 hours, so it took about 18 hours from Fukuoka to Portland. There is a 16 hour time difference between Japan and Oregon. Therefore it was so hard to recover from jet lag. Fall term started from October 1, so we had free time for the first 5 days. It was good for us to recover from jet lag and get used to our new life in America. In this 5 days, we went many places. Our host family took us to shopping mall and downtown. Also we practiced getting on a Trimet bus to our university and went around in Marylhurst.

The first day in PIA, October 1, we took a placement test. PIA has many classes divided according to ability level, so I can take the classes that best suit me. I think it is one of the good point of studying here. This year, there are many students from Japan. I was really surprised. Of course we have to speak English in a class, but I think we shouldn’t talk in Japanese outside of classes even if it is difficult to explain or express something in English.
In my class, there are Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Mexican and Saudi Arabian student. They are very nice and active. Also, teachers are very kind and interesting persons. They always say that if we have a question, we can ask and send an email whenever we want even if it is outside of class. I was relieved to hear that. Their classes are very interesting and they give us a lot of assignment. It is hard to finish after school, but I think it is need to improve our English.
In addition to basic classes, I and Yuna take a Service Learning Class on every Tuesday. On January and February, we will join a Service Learning Program. We will work in two places for 6 weeks, and this class help us find a good volunteer placement and prepare for the experience of volunteering in an American non-profit environment. It will be a challenging experience for us because we will have to talk and work with American people. In addition, we have an assignment every class and have to join Preparation Course in winter vacation.

There are a lot of things what I have to do everyday, but I am very satisfied. Thanks to my family, teachers, International Center in CJ, my friends and my host family, I can able to study here. I am grateful for your support. I’ll do my best for 5 months.
