Service Learning

Jul . 2019

Hello everyone!!! I hope you are enjoying beginning of the summer! Form June 24th, I’m doing service learning!!!! So, in this report, I’d like to take about my service learning life in Portland!!

By the way, do you know what service learning is? Maybe some people don’t know about it, so I want to talk about what it is at the first. In short, service learning is a problem of volunteering in Portland. PIA, a language school I’m going, has two different types of class. First class is for studying English, of course, and second class is for studying US business culture as well as for studying English.

From now, I’m going to talk about my experience in my work places. I’m working at preschool, Japanese Garden, and book store. All workplaces are great, and fortunately, all of them are totally different. That means I can get three different experience! How lucky am I!!! I’m working Monday, Tuesday, Friday, at preschool, Thursday or Saturday at Japanese Garden, and Sunday at book store! As you can see, it’s kinda hard schedule, so sometimes I am really tired. However I’m having a good time there, so I still love my job! Yeah n preschool, mostly what I have to do is playing with kids. That have twice of outside time in a day, so I always play sharks and memos, a kind of tag, with more than 10 kids including other class kids. That give me a good sleep time in night time lol! In Japanese Garden, I am working as a village host, so my job is helping guests with answering questions or offering help. In the time, I have to be really active and patient person because sometimes people do not need any help, or I don’t have perfect answer for them. I think this is the really good opportunity to learn what good hospitality is. Also, in bookstore, I’m selling many stuff including books. The books are not new; they were donated from library or individual, but their quality is pretty good and cheap. I can learn how to talk with customers friendly, but also about the retail culture in US. In the store, I’m not always busy, and sometimes it’s really slow in the store. That means I have to find my job by myself except dealing people. Recently, I try to display stuffs nicely for customers in slow time because I don’t want to just sit down, and I know some customers had hard time to get their items. So, what I learned in the situation is that we can do something even if the day is really slow.

My service learning term is just started, so I hope I can have good opportunity to learn many things. If anyone who will come to PIA is watching this report, I recommend you to take more than three different kinds of job.

Thank you for reading and have a nice day!!!
