To Go Through Hardship
Dec . 2015
My study abroad was already half over. In Oregon, the rainy season has begun. Rainy day is warmer than sunny day, so I do not care if the weather is bad. In this report, I am going to write about Thanksgiving Day, and final exam.

First, I would like to write about Thanksgiving. For American, Thanksgiving is very important family day and the day to say “thank you”. We had no classes. What I was so surprised is that even McDonald’s was not opened on Thanksgiving. Actually on the day before Thanksgiving, I felt so bad because I suffered from food poisoning. However, fortunately I recovered from that on Thanksgiving, so I could enjoy American Thanksgiving so much. As lunch I ate Thanksgiving foods such as turkey and cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and so on with my host family. After that, I went to a home party which I was invited by my friend. Although a family is neither my real family nor my host family, they welcomed me warmly. I had really good time while helping to cook, having Thanksgiving dinner, and talking with them. Also, I played scrabble with them for the first time. It is American board game and we have to make American word. My friend is an international student from Austria. It was tough for us even we played together. However, we could be winners finally thanks to her. Before I came here I did not know American culture so much, but the more time goes by, the more I am attracted by American culture.

Next, I am going to talk about final exam. At writing class as a final paper I had to write a four-page argument essay, which is most academic style of writing in America. For Japanese it is so difficult to say opposite opinions directly, so it was really tough for me. I chose a topic about physician-assisted suicide, which is hot topic in the world. Last year young women claimed this system and passed away in Oregon. That’s why I chose this topic. As I said in former reports, the teachers at PIA teach us hard. When I was struggling with my essay, one of my teachers helped me. After school, he taught me how to organize and how to persuade readers. With his help, I could finish with a final essay. At speaking class, all students in my class chose different topics and did presentations on final. All presentations of other students were amazing and interesting. I hated presentation but at final presentation I could enjoy doing presentation. Through studying at PIA I could learned a lot of things. Sometime I lost confidence because I got bad score on writing paper and in impromptu presentation I completely forgot my conclusion. However, now I can say I could grow because of such difficulties. I really like my teachers and my friends at PIA, so I feel happy that final was over but sad that I cannot take classes anymore. Next year, finally volunteering is started, so I would like to bring experiences at PIA into volunteering.
