Feeling The Culture of America

Feeling The Culture Of America

Since I came to the United States I am always surprised about how fast time passes. I have been to two countries beside the US. Although I got homesick both times, I have not gotten homesick yet. I think it is because I enjoy my life here due to my host family, my friends, and my teachers. In addition to these reasons, I feel I have improved more than the last times I studied abroad. However, my English is still poor so I would like to improve more. In this report, I will talk about American events and school life at PIA.

First I am going to talk about Halloween, which is one of the events I had looked forward to for a long time. The weekend before Halloween I joined an event going to a pumpkin patch with Momoko and new friends. The pumpkin patch is a farm where we can choose and buy big pumpkins. I visited a Corn maze with my friends also. It was very interesting that we had to answer some questions like American traditional songs to reach our goal. We all pulled together and made it finally. On Halloween my host mother took me to her friend’s grand father’s house. I had a good time baking pumpkin cookies while talking with other people and trying traditional pumpkin carving. I would like to not only study English, but also enjoy American culture. I am looking forward to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Second, I am going to talk about midterm tests and my service learning program. Last week we had midterm tests for each subject. The test I prepared most was for a presentation in my speaking class. For this test we had to make a seven or right minute presentation about a cutting-edge technology. It was my first time to do presentation in English without paper so I practiced a lot with my host mother and friends. Eventually I got very nervous but I did my best. At the same time I was inspired by others’ presentations and speaking skills. Next month I will have final tests so I want to brush up my English skills totally. Also, this midterm test means that fall term is half over. I do not waste time at PIA and I keep my motivation high.

Finally, my service learning places were decided. I had to take an interview to be chosen for a placement at a hostel. The interview took place just before the Halloween party at PIA, so I did my interview in a costume. I can’t imagine this situation in Japan so I thought this is America. I really like American culture like this. By the way, before volunteering we had to make American resumes and cover letters. I think I wouldn’t know how to make them if I didn’t attend this program so this was very useful for me. One of my volunteer place is an organization related to Martin Luther King and I can communicate with kids. I have an experience as a tutor in Japan so I want to bring this into working there. The other is volunteering at a hostel. I am going to volunteer as a receptionist or with cleaning, among other things. I will have opportunities to meet people from all over the world. This program will start next year and I am looking forward to it already. I am going to be busy because of the long commutes and working at two different places at the same time, but I would like to enjoy myself and continue to be positive.
